A late night secret meeting in Kabul

It was 11:30pm and almost three hours into an intense discussion in a mini-palace in central Kabul on 7 December 2013. The participants, a small group of super-rich political elites, had gathered to hear classified briefings from two comrades-in-cause - Bismillah Mohammadi, Afghan defense minister, and Salahuddin Rabbani, chairman of the Afghan High Peace Council.

Mr. Mohammadi had just returned from Brussels where he’d attended a NATO ministerial gathering about Afghanistan and at the sidelines of which he’d held separate talks with U.S. and NATO officials.
The meeting was in a Kabul mini-palace

“I told Kerry [John Kerry, U.S. Secretary of State] we want it signed and that it will be signed,” Mohammadi told the participants referring to a controversial Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA) of Afghanistan and the U.S. awaiting final signature by President Hamid Karzai.

“They wanted to know how can we force Karzai to sign it or at least allow a minister to do it,” he added.

“You could have told him ‘it’s all your blind support that has made this stupid man so insane’,” one participants interrupted.

“They know it,” Mohammadi responded instantly.

In the meeting that cold winter night were Dr Abdullah, a long-time presidential hopeful and a former foreign minister, Amrullah Saleh, former director of the National Security Directorate, Haseen Fahim, a brother of the Vice-President Qasim Fahim, Yunus Qanooni, a former minister, Atta Mohammad Noor, governor of Balkh Province, Haji Almaas, a member of parliament and about four other associates and confidants.

A Pashtun plot

There was a strong consensus among the participants that President Karzai’s refusal to promptly sign the BSA had to be linked to his Pashtun ethnicity.

“I told them because Karzai thinks that his Pashtuns will be losers, he does not want to sign it...he wants their homes be protected in Kandahar and Helmand,” Mohammadi said.

At one point in the meeting it was said that only Karzai, Hekmatyar and Taliban opposed the BSA - the vicious Pashtun triangle.

Although large plates filled with fresh fruits were laying alongside trays of dry fruits and sweets over the tables but participants were mostly sipping tea.

At stake, in the BSA’s complicated affair, was not only the group’s collective grip on political power but each participant’s business interests. For them, the U.S. was not only an ally but a guarantor of the post-Taliban regime in which they’ve thrived politically, financially and even morally.

“We should tell them that the North and the West are signing this agreement and Karzai must go to his South and die with his Pashtun brothers,” Atta Mohammad Noor was heard saying.

Others suggested that Karzai should be warned that if he delayed inking the BSA, the Northern leaders would seek direct arrangements with the Americans and all U.S. military bases would be offered in the northern provinces of the country.

“His Kandahar will be bombed from the North,” one participant said loudly.

The mood among the participants was more like a WW-II meeting of allied leaders pondering over attacks on German territories than a chitchat of Afghan politicians in the presence of a national defense minister.

The wrong peace envoy

“He was like a dead body,” said Salahuddin Rabbani, Karzai’s chief peace-maker for the Taliban.

He was talking about Mullah Bradar, a former second-in-command of the Taliban who has been held by Pakistani intelligence agency since 2010.

Years of Karzai’s advocacy for Bradar’s release had only given partial success in late November 2013 when Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif agreed to permit a visit of Afghan peace  council with  Bradar at a secure location in Pakistan.

Karzai had sent Rabbani to see Mullah Bradar and now he was sharing the classified details of his top secret visit with his Jamiat leaders. Jamiat Islami is a political network of the former Northern Alliance which was headed by Salahuddin’s father, Burhanuddin Rabbani, also chairman of the peace council who was assassinated in 2012.

“He was kind of drugged and could not talk but I whispered in his filthy ear ‘Mullah sahib, enjoy!” and a laughter broke out.

My source, who witnessed the meeting until it ended at about 11:52pm on 7 December 2013, received a call and he had to leave.

Can this be a story, I asked myself as I walked out of the coffee shop where we meet in Kabul. No. Who will run it? But I had to write what I had heard. Perhaps it could give lead to others to run their stories on it.

  1. THIS ARTICLE HAS A LOT TRUTH TO IT ! WHY KARZAI DOES NOT SIGN THE AGREEMENT WITH U.S. ?? KARZAI HAS PLAYED A DOUBLE SWORD ALL ALONG . IN ONE SIDE HE LOVE THE U.S. DOLLARS AND PROTECTION , FROM THE OTHER SIDE HE IS AND HAS BEEN WITH TALIBAN AND ISI FRIENDS , WHAT A GAME !! NOW , HE IS DELAYING THE AGREEMENT TILL PERMISSION FROM HIS OTHER HALF TALIBAN ! THE MAJORITY OF THE COUNTRY WANTS IT SIGNED , I REALLY FEEL THAT THOSE PROVINCES THAT WANTS THE AGREEMENT SIGNED SHOULD GO AHEAD AND DO SO! I THINK KARZAI ONLY WANTS HIS PUSHTUNE TRIBES TO BE CARED FOR AND THE REST HE COULD CARE LESS!! THE COUNTRY NEEDS THIS AGREEMENT WITH THE WEST FOR THEIR OWN SECURITY AND BETTER FUTURE!! THAT IS MY , WHAT IS YOURS???????

  3. Cooool story of 22 mins! well narrated JOKE OF THE CENTURY!! Mr. Karzai will definitely sign this BSA, He makes all these nonsense political dramas to show people that he is a national hero and the history should not call him as the second Shah Shuja. He has political motives for the upcoming election, which I am sure, is not about the people that supports him blindly, those are all about having the political for his family. He doesn't care about the night raids on the house's by coalition forces, if he was concerned about that issue, he would have taken the initiative and would have included separate clause for it in the BSA. The story above is totally fake and the only point in this story is to show that Tajiks are coward and the betrayals to their homeland and put the responsibility of BSA on their shoulder, in case if it is not in favor of the country then they can easily say that Tajik leaders forced Karzai to sign. For those who have written and shared this story, I will suggest to refer the history books first and then you will know, who have really stood for this country. Writing and sharing of these kinds of stories shows who are nationalists and in favor of partition. I don't support those who are provoking war and bringing misery to this country, but I will never tolerate that someone come and target my ethnicity directly.

  4. Pashtuns are like dogs ... as much these fucking coward pakistani and arab stooges with british and US daddies bark the better we understand them. They know they have already lost everything and if they don´t know this they surely will know it next year (for sure!). Pashtuns love to lick Pkaistani and other foreign cocks. Even if this is true Americans still are better to us than Awghani dogs and their Paki masters. One thing should everyone know - every Pashtun is buyable - even the brits knew this and still every power is using Pashtuns but never a Tajik, a Hazara or Uzbek because these ethnics aren´t kosfrosh as Pashtuns are but the BSA is a totally different case. It´s about our future and not Karzai and his terrorist and ape-like Pashtun people decide over 70% of Afghanistan but the 70% of Afghanistan decide over their own fate. Me, as a Kabuli, I don´t care about bombs fucking Awghans in Kandhaar. Who cares? ... As long me and my own nation have our own territory, own Kabul, Herat, Mazar, ...27 out of 34 provinces... we give a shit about Pashtuns and their Pashtun brothers called Taliban or Arabs..

You should be one of those whose father is unknown yet. Your Mom should be from Panjshir or Badakhsan and father could be some one....you may ask your Mom. Best of luck.

  5. These plots are again for the starting of new civil war and we Afghans are One Nation, We should not let and support those who want war for there individualistic benefits. We should think for a nation not for the benefits of a special class. This is very shame to all Afghans that our Defense Minister Besmullah Mohmmadi is doing this. Under democratic act he should think for the whole nation not for their own class and for their own group. We should support those who is thinking for the entire nation like Hamid Karzai, still he is indifference in any kinds of solution. Criminals are Criminals and criminals will never do any thing for the welfare of Afghanistan they just wants money, authority and they are loyal to their own benefits. We should not blame each other on the basis of ethnic but we should think for the unity Afghanistan and all our perceptions should obtain that we are one nation........ If it is right then Afghan government should judge and punish those who trying to coup or stagnate this government.

  7. Other wise people in the world, first think, then talk....but our afghan wises; first talk and then think what we have said. Ofcourse our fools, never think what they have said....The tribe, ethnicity, language and other preferences, are very funny to talk about...this is not the time to raise such stupid issues...why we do not fell how we have been back from the development and civilisation comparing other nations in the world? how we can save our nation from our stupid nieghbors; pakistan and iran...and how we can fight against all these issues of ethnicity and language and take steps towards unity...we need the support of west and that is the reality...Karzai is not thinking aout national benifits....as I know him, he is worried about his name in the history...and the second....his brothers, Gulbuddin and Taliban, has given Melon to his hand, so his hand is not free to sign something which is in the benifits of the nation.....if he is a clever politician, why he called loya jerga if he does not want to hear thier demands? is he kidding with the Nation? I reques you all, do not provoke the ethnicity, language and other stupid sissues anymore...it is not in our national benifits, instead for the benifits of Pakistan and Iran or more enemies. Respecting you all.

  8. I think that though the Afghans have a constitution for the last ten years, but the real democracy does nit seem to have been understood by them. Instead of talking and thinking on ethnic lines - Pushtun, Tajik, Uzbek and Hazaras, they need to act and behave in democratc way. If an overwhelming majority agrees with the advice of the elders at the Loya Jirga, called by the President himself, then what is holding them from taking to the streets and force the Prsident to act on the majority view. In any other country where the people have tasted the democracy, the people would have agitated peacefully to show the powers that be that the will of the people must prevail.

  9. These kind of Articles are totally unprofitable and against for positive thinking to Unity, Prosperity and stability in war suffered Afghanistan, if any bodies are blowing the embers of fire, they will be shamefully torture among the friends and partners, they should stop these kind of activities, and should not boost to new civil war. We don't know that how these hills are still in the hand of others, they don't know the national interest and patriotism. They would not achieved the aims and goals. Now every Afghan are aware of these people activities, they will not deceits again as such was in the past, we afghans are one Nation, under One Flag.....if really, each leaders repeating these activities, one day these leaders would be alone and would be face the results and circumstances. They are using the post and given power negatively or on wrong way. They are not have the rivalry glands inside the bodies, other wise they would not repeating these points.......look to neighbours and world, where reach they, where we left.........Shame for these kind of traitors and betrayers....Long live---One Afghanistan and One Nation.

  10. This is the hardest time of our history, guys be careful of yours words. Afghanistan is firstly undividable, not just because of the interests of all Afghan inhabitant ethnics but because of the interest of stability in the region. Secondly, our geopolitical location force us to live together but finally we must find a democratic way to live together. some people thinking that Karzai is defending Pashtuns' interests or Bismillah the Tajik one's, that is not wright. they are defending their billion dollars assets. and that they should finally attend if not the National court they should attend International court of Justice and return back Billions of Dollard to Afghanistan people. it will happen , no matter later or sooner. 13. AJMAL JAANA - I give you a B for effort, but an F for plausibility. Next time you want to create a story like this to mislead the people and create tensions you should not go so far as to claim that Amrullah Saleh attends Jamiati meetings. Everyone knows he has fallen out with them. Worse that that, an even more amateur school boy error is your giving away clues about who your source is in this fictional story you have made. Which serious blogger gives clues about his alleged source, clues which could identify him ? You tried too hard to sound genuine, but you got carried away.

Once again, nice effort, but this Shaitanat will come back and burn you.
